Sciatica is a complex and often uncomfortable condition that manifests as tingling, numbing, and occasional pins and needles sensations originating in the glute muscle. These sensations can radiate down the back of the legs, extending to the side of the lower leg. The underlying cause of sciatica lies within the sciatic nerve, a substantial structure that runs between the piriformis and glute max muscles.
While relatively uncommon, some individuals are born with a unique anatomical variation where the sciatic nerve traverses through the piriformis muscle. However, such anomalies are rare and not typically encountered. More frequently, sciatica referral pain occurs due to the tightening and hypertonicity of the muscles surrounding the nerve's path. This tightening place pressure on the nerve, leading to constriction and the characteristic discomfort associated with sciatica.
SYMPTOMS
The symptoms of sciatica go beyond the initial tingling and numbing sensations. Patients dealing with sciatica pain may also endure:
-lower back discomfort, especially on the side of the affected leg
-Walking can become an irritable task, as can sleep, which is often disrupted by pain and throbbing sensations.
Sciatica pain isn't restricted to specific demographics, but it is notably prevalent among patients who have lumbar lordosis, a condition characterized by an excessive inward curve of the lower spine. Pregnant women, who often experience shifts in their body's centre of gravity and added strain on the lower back, are also susceptible to sciatica.
RED FLAGS! In more serious cases, sciatica pain may be as a result of:
- a prolapsed disc
-a spinal injury
-bone spurs caused by osteoarthritis
-narrowing of the spinal canal
-a tumour
-an abscess
